In Deutschland herrscht der Lockdown-Winter. Das gesellschaftliche Leben ist auf den Gefrierpunkt heruntergefahren. Dem trotzend probt eine Theatertruppe Goethes “Faust“ und es bleibt nicht aus, dass alle Beteiligten ihre Nöte, Ängste, Sorgen und ihre Wut mit auf die Bühne bringen. Bereits im „Vorspiel auf dem Theater“ brechen die Konflikte auf. Warum sträubt sich der Direktor die Regieanweisungen umzusetzen? Warum ist der Dichter zu spät? Warum hängt die Regisseurin ständig an ihrem Handy? Warum vergeht der Lustigen Person das Lachen? Und wozu braucht die Gesellschaft überhaupt freie Kunst? Mit dieser beunruhigenden Leitfrage reflektiert CoronaFAUST das kulturelle Selbstverständnis Deutschlands in Zeiten der globalen Pandemie.

Germany in the first lockdown winter. Clubs and theaters are closed. Social and cultural life has dropped below the freezing point. Warming up for better times, an independent theater group goes on with rehearsals despite strict restrictions. Turning for solace to Goethe’s “Faust” all those involved are bringing their anger, fears and worries on stage. Right from the start the dramaturgy of private conflicts dominates the theater. Why can’t the director on stage follow the lead of the director in charge? Why is the poet constantly too late? Why is the funny person not smiling? And why does society need free art at all? With this worrying key question, CoronaFAUST reflects on Germany’s cultural self-image in times of the global pandemic.
